summary
We are delighted to present an exhibition of Four Centuries of Oil Sketches and Drawings with W.M. Brady & Co. The exhibition will include works from a distinguished New York private collection and will be on view at our gallery from 30 January to 7 February 2026 as part of Master Drawings New York.
A highlight of our show is a highly finished Design for a Tomb Monument by John Deare (1759–1798), one of the greatest British Neoclassical sculptors. The artist could well have been the dedicatee of the monument. The sheet is signed and dated to 1787, just three years after Deare settled in Rome where he would live the rest of his short but intense life. It has passed down two prominent English collections, that of Rupert Forbes Gunnis (1899–1965), the collector and author of the Dictionary of British Sculptures 1600–1851 and John Harris OBE (1931–2022), the historian of architecture and an authority on architectural drawings. Another notable work on view, formerly in the collection of Ronald Lauder, is L’avocat à la barre (The Lawyer at the Bar) by Honoré Daumier, drawn circa 1864–65. The artist, best known for his biting satire and social critique, frequented the Palais de Justice in Paris in the 1830s and returned to such courtroom subjects often in the next 30 years.
A fine selection of oil sketches, or bozzetti, by artists from the 16th to 19th century will include examples by Giorgio Vasari, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Corrado Giaquinto, Théodore Gericault, among others. ❖
