Johann Georg Platzer was the preeminent society painter in 18th-century rococo Vienna.

From lavish parties, festive processions, to scenes from Greek and Roman mythology and history, Platzer excelled in capturing the splendor and pomp beloved by Viennese high society along with their intellectual pursuits. His paintings are characterized by a taste for opulence, a restless energy and his horror vacui compulsion for a wealth of dazzling detail. Typically painted on copper for their enamelled finish, Platzer uses a sophisticated and extended palette—a symphony of lilacs, lemons, sea green, purples, pinks and pearlescent white—rooted in the aesthetics of Rudolph II a century earlier. The theatrical energy, wit and joie de vivre of his bright and lustrous pictures painted over a span of three decades appealed to the taste of the rich and noble, reaching in his lifetime across Europe, from Frederick I of Sweden to the Empress Catherine the Great (1729–1796) and her court in Russia.

Born and trained in South Tyrol near Bolzano (today Northern Italy), Platzer came from a family of painters. His first documented work is an altarpiece painted for the Saint Helena church in Deutschnofen near his hometown while working under his stepfather Josef Anton Kessler. In 1723 he travelled to Passau (today Southern Germany) to study with his uncle, Jakob Christoff Platzer, who served as court painter to the Bishop of Passau. Both mentors gave the young artist a taste for historical and biblical scenes rich with figures, embellishment, and magnificent costumes.
